Q: Use your own words to summarize the events surrounding Old Lady Rong on pgs 81-85.
A: Surrounding the old lady Rong were blurry shouts of Red Guards mixed with the angry barking of Rong’s big dog. A da-zi-bao was posted on the gate. Sad crowds gathered to read the da-zi-bao. (pg.81) People were huddled in front of the da-zi-bao. They were talking in small groups. Children were running up and down the alley. (pg83) Conversations in hushed tones were held. (pg.84) Sounds of drums and gongs were heard. (pg.85)

Q: What does the sound of drums and gongs mean in Ji-Li’s life?
A: When Ji-Li hears the sound of drums and gongs, it meant that the Red Guards were ransacking the houses of class enemies to find and confiscate their hoarded possessions. (pg.80-81)

Q: Who is Song Po-Po? How does her leaving affect Ji-Li’s home affect Ji-Li’s life?
A: Song Po-Po was originally a nanny. As Ji-Li and her siblings grew up, she became their housekeeper. (pg.14) When Song Po-Po left, that meant that there was more work to be done in the family. “I volunteered to buy meat and vegetables at the market” (pg.89)

Q: What is a dowry? What items does Grandmother have left from her dowry? What does Ji-Li’s mother do with their ancestors’ clothes? Why does she do this?
A: A dowry is sort of like a gift or a present. Grandmother has four trunks. They were a rich red leather, with a pattern stamped in gold. Each trunk had two sets of brass locks no its front and a round brass handle on each end. (pg. 94) “Mom and Grandma discussed the job while cutting: which parts could be used for covers and which parts for cushions” (pg. 94) Ji-Li’s mom does this because if they didn’t cut it up, it would counted as four olds and the red guards would throw them away.
